Resume & LinkedIn Profile Wow, But Communication 0?

In the digital era, personal branding through CVs and LinkedIn profiles has become the mainstay of many job seekers. Neat visualizations, convincing descriptions of work experience, and interesting skill summaries often give the impression that candidates are ready to compete in the professional world. However, in reality, many of them have difficulty when they have to face interviews or explain ideas in front of clients. This problem shows a gap between digital appearance and real communication skills.

This phenomenon is reflected in the Job Outlook 2023 data by NACE, which shows that 91.2% of recruiters consider verbal communication very important, but only 48.9% of candidates are considered able to do it well.

In Indonesia, the JobStreet survey (2022) Uncovering the Indonesian Job Market to Develop also stated that many candidates failed to convince in interviews even though they had promising CVs.

One of the main causes is the lack of communication practice in real contexts. Candidates often focus too much on compiling a written portfolio, without honing their ability to convey ideas verbally in professional situations. In fact, as Davidson (2016) stated, "Communication is not just about conveying ideas, it is about constructing meaning collaboratively in real-time contexts". In other words, communication is not just about talking, but the process of building shared meaning in life situations.

Unfortunately, the education and job training system often emphasizes theory more than direct practice. The lack of mentoring or supervisors widens the gap between technical skills and soft skills, especially in small organizations and fast-paced startups. This condition is very crucial in Indonesia, which, according to Hofstede (2010) has a highly contextual communication culture. In an environment like this, the ability to convey messages in a socially appropriate manner becomes much more important.

In response to these challenges, technology now presents practical solutions in the form of AI-based interactive communication simulations. Platforms such as Elwyn AI, for example, offer communication exercises through realistic roleplays, allowing users to practice interviews, pitching, and presentations with automatic feedback. Research by Ramirez & Puranam (2021) shows that AI-based interpersonal training is more effective in shaping communication behavior than traditional lecture methods.

Exercises like this not only train self-confidence, but also teach how to convey messages with structure, empathy, and clarity. Thus, communication is no longer an obstacle, but a competitive advantage that strengthens professional credibility.
